Every first-time excavator buyer asks the same three questions, but usually in the wrong order. They lead with brand or dealer, then move to price, then think about spec. By the time they're comparing spec sheets, they've already narrowed themselves out of the machine that would actually fit their work.
The right order is: access, then dig depth, then transport. Get those three right and the weight class picks itself. Get them wrong and you either bought a machine that can't get to the work, or you paid for capacity you'll never use.

Your access width sets your ceiling on machine width. The compact excavator classes break down roughly like this:
- 1-ton class (SHY12): 27-30 inches wide with dozer blade retracted. Fits through anything down to about 32 inches.
- 1.4-ton class (SHY15): 39-42 inches wide. Fits through most 48-inch gates. Does not fit through 36-inch gates.
- 2-ton class (SHY20): 47-52 inches wide. Requires 54-inch or wider access.
- 2.7-ton class (SHY27): 55-60 inches wide. Effectively a driveway-only machine for residential work.
If your bread and butter is backyard pool prep, drainage in existing yards, or utility work behind fenced houses, the 36-inch gate reality alone often makes the 1-ton the only viable answer. Not because it's the best machine, but because it's the only one that gets to the work.
Rule of Thumb
Measure the narrowest point on your typical job, not the widest. If you can't get to the work, you don't own an excavator, you own a display piece.
Question 2: What's your typical dig depth?
Every weight class targets a dig depth range. Trying to work outside that range means either you're constantly overreaching the machine, or you brought a machine that can't finish the job.
Typical Front Range residential dig depths and the matching class:
- 24-40 inches: Landscape drainage, sprinkler line trenches, small footings. 1-ton class.
- 40-72 inches: Sewer laterals, gas lines, small foundation prep. 1.4-ton class.
- 6-9 feet: Full residential foundations, deep utilities, septic tanks. 2-ton class.
- 9-11 feet: Commercial foundations, deep utility work, septic plus leach field. 2.7-ton class.
For a landscape contractor whose typical dig is 30 to 36 inches, the 1-ton is genuinely the right tool. Buying a 1.4-ton "for the extra capacity" means you're paying more, transporting more weight, and burning more fuel to do exactly the same work.
Question 3: What are you towing it with?
The most common regret in first-time compact excavator purchases is that the buyer underestimated the trailer and truck required to actually move the machine.
- 1-ton class: Total transport weight (machine + trailer) around 4,500-5,500 lbs. Half-ton pickup with a proper hitch handles it. Standard 12-foot trailer works.
- 1.4-ton class: Total transport around 6,500-7,500 lbs. Needs a three-quarter-ton pickup and a 14-16 foot trailer.
- 2-ton class: Total transport 8,500-10,000 lbs. Requires a proper three-quarter-ton diesel or one-ton pickup and a 16-18 foot trailer.
- 2.7-ton class: Total transport 11,000-13,000 lbs. One-ton dually territory. Many owners have this machine delivered rather than trailered.
If you're driving a stock F-150 and thinking about a 2-ton machine, understand that you're also buying a trailer upgrade and probably a truck upgrade. Factor $8,000 to $15,000 into your decision, or accept that you're paying $250 per delivery every time you move the machine.
The right-sized machine at $12,499 is a better investment than the wrong-sized machine at $6,499.
Class recommendations by job type
Some common Colorado job profiles and the machine we'd recommend:
Landscape crew, mostly residential drainage and small hardscape
SHY12 (1-ton). Fits every gate, matches the dig depth, tows behind existing trucks. If you're doing more than 200 jobs per year at this profile, the 1-ton is your machine.
General residential contractor, pool prep and foundation work
SHY15 (1.4-ton). The sweet spot for most residential work. Reaches deep enough for pool shells and foundation work, still light enough for reasonable transport. About 60% of our residential customers land here.
Custom home builder or septic contractor
SHY20 (2-ton). Real dig depth for foundations. Real cab for full-day operation. Handles the depth you need for septic and full foundation work without asking you to overreach a smaller machine.
Commercial contractor or deep utility work
SHY27 (2.7-ton). Only if the work justifies it. This is not a residential machine. If your typical job is a commercial site with deep utility or foundation work, this is the class you need.
When to size up vs. size down
Two rules of thumb.
Size up when you're consistently at the top of your current machine's reach or capacity for more than about 20% of your work. If the SHY15 is reaching its dig depth on every third job, the SHY20 will pay for itself in speed alone.
Size down when your machine sits in the yard because you can't get it to the work. A machine you don't use because it's too big is more expensive than a slightly slower machine that's on every job.
The bottom line
Don't pick a machine by price and hope it fits. Pick a machine by access, dig depth, and transport, then look at price within that class. Machines are tools. The right tool for your specific work will outperform the wrong tool at any price point.
